Aliagha Azizov - International Alumni
Aliagha Azizov
I was born in 1996 in Sumgayit, Azerbaijan, a city whose industrial character and proximity to the Caspian Sea shaped my early awareness of environmental challenges. Growing up, I became increasingly conscious of how closely water, nature, and human activity are connected, and how fragile this balance can be.
Between 2018 and 2020, I pursued a Master’s degree in Agricultural Water Management Engineering at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE) under the scholarship program of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Studying at MATE was a turning point. The international academic environment broadened my perspective, and the university’s strong scientific approach helped me develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deeper understanding of integrated water resources management. I also strengthened my ability to communicate across cultures—an essential skill in today’s water sector
In 2020, I began my professional career as a Chief Advisor at Azerbaijan Amelioration and Water Management OJSC. Working in the public sector taught me the value of responsibility, teamwork, and long-term vision. In 2024, I joined the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency as Head of the Science and Innovation Sector within the Strategy, International Cooperation and Science Department, where I worked at the intersection of research, innovation, and policy. During this time, I also took a personal step that mattered deeply to me: I helped build professional links between my institution and MATE, creating opportunities for cooperation and knowledge exchange.
In 2025, I was appointed Deputy Head of the same department, and since 2026 I have been serving as Deputy Head of the State Control Service for the Use and Protection of Water Resources under the Agency. This role carries significant responsibility, and I approach it with a strong sense of duty, knowing that effective water governance directly affects people’s lives and the country’s future.
I am proud to be part of the MATE alumni community. My journey has shown me that success is not a single achievement, but a continuous commitment to learning, service, and meaningful impact.
