Clarification of the Call for proposal and deadline extension

The strategic goal of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences is to become the leading agricultural university in the region, supporting the achievements of the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a major internationally known and recognized center of agricultural research and innovation.  

In line with this, we are pleased to announce the launch the pilot of the International PhD Scholarship of the Research Excellence Programme. 

The Programme aims to attract and support outstanding international PhD students whose research contributes to MATE's strategic research priorities while strengthening the University's international scientific visibility, research excellence, and future research capacity. 

The Programme complements the doctoral admission process by providing an excellence-based scholarship for outstanding applicants admitted to one of MATE's doctoral schools.

Who should apply? 

Applications are welcome from international students who: 

  • have submitted an application for admission to one of MATE's doctoral schools by 31 May 2026, or have applied through the supplementary doctoral admission procedure;  
  • develop their research proposal jointly with a full-time MATE supervisor;  
  • propose research aligned with one of MATE's priority research areas, described in the Call for Applications;  
  • fulfill the eligibility requirements specified in the Call for Applications.  
  • ideal applicant has an existing academic or research collaboration with MATE and has already demonstrated research potential through previous scientific publications. 

Please note: Application to a MATE Doctoral School is a prerequisite for receiving support under the Programme. Accordingly, applicants must also submit their application to the relevant MATE Doctoral School according to the Doctoral School's admission procedure and deadlines.  

Scholarship 

Successful applicants will receive: 

  • Scholarship amount: HUF 2.500.000 gross per year (at the current exchange rate of HUF 355/EUR, the scholarship corresponds to approximately EUR 7.000 per year, depending on the applicable exchange rate, provided as a tax-free scholarship) 
  • Duration: 2 years (September 2026 - September 2028) 
  • Number of scholarships: up to 4  

Continuation of funding into the second year is subject to the successful completion of the first-year academic and research milestones.

What should the application include? 

Applicants are required to submit an English-language application jointly prepared with their supervisor, including: 

  • academic background and achievements;  
  • motivation and career objectives;  
  • detailed research plan;  
  • expected scientific, innovation-related and international impacts;  
  • planned milestones and commitments;  
  • supervisor's recommendation and institutional support.

The application must also include all mandatory supporting documents specified in the Call. 

Important Dates

Call opens: 10 July 2026 

Application deadline: 31 July 2026

Extended deadline of application: 31 August 2026 

Notification of results: First half of September 2026 

Expected programme start: 15 September 2026

Programme benefits 

In addition to financial support participants will benefit from: 

  • tuition fee waiver for the duration of the doctoral study;
  • a place in a dormitory is guaranteed, subject to payment of the fee for international students as specified in the dormitory regulations;
  • access to University research infrastructure and research work under the guidance of internationally recognized researchers of MATE;
  • individual scientific advisory sessions;  
  • participation in professional networking events;  
  • opportunities to strengthen their international scientific visibility;  
  • inclusion in MATE's Research Excellence community.
