The Flagship Research Groups Programme 2024 is launched

The Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences will provide priority support to 13 research groups for three years. The documents were handed over to the leaders of the research teams by Rector Dr Csaba Gyuricza at a ceremony on the Kaposvár Campus. The Flagship Research Groups Programme is an integral part of the "MATE 2030" strategy to further enhance the research and publication performance of our University and thereby increase our international visibility.

In 2023, MATE launched the Research Excellence Programme as a pilot, and based on its experience, the Flagship Research Groups Programme was developed. At the opening ceremony held on the Kaposvár Campus, Rector Dr Csaba Gyuricza emphasised that the aim is to make MATE the region's leading agricultural-focused higher education institution. In order to achieve this, in 2024 the University created its vision "MATE 2030", which includes the Flagship Research Groups Programme.

"Now the best researchers and research teams will be supported to become part of an international research ecosystem. This is important for internationalisation, and we want to attract more professors from abroad to the University. We are also counting on the talented young people who are still looking for a career abroad, and we want to offer them a career path", he said, adding that he expects the Programme to further strengthen MATE's academic performance and reputation. The University is already home to outstanding researchers who, either individually or through the research teams they lead, are producing high quality research. The Flagship Research Groups Programme aims to support these researchers and research groups, in addition to other forms of support, by providing them with financial resources to further their scientific development over a three-year period.

At the event, Dr Zoltán Kovács, Head of Research Strategy, presented the Flagship Research Groups Programme, as well as the details and results of the tender. "The aim of the Programme is to consolidate internationally competitive think tanks, to establish and operate research groups eligible for international research funding bids, thus ensuring greater self-sustainability of our University in terms of research funding. The Programme also aims to further enhance the high quality of publications and intellectual property rights, to ensure academic post-graduate education through high quality and self-sustainable research, and to enhance the international reputation of the University."
